Where is it going?HEALTHCARE -
Where Is It Going?
I believe it is now time to step back and look at the view of healthcare from out of the woods. The decreasing population of medical support staff and an increase of patients, has created an enormous gap in the quality brought to the most important people of all, the patients.

In the past year, the NHA has reached out and joined forces with organizations such as the 1199 Hospital Workers Union, WB Saunders, Eli Research Center of Disease Control, Hospitals and Training Institutions throughout the USA. These joint forces are promoting a safer professional work environment for healthcare workers. We feel in order for healthcare workers to achieve their goals and provide an excellent quality of patient care, the professional must feel healthy, valued, optimistic and energized.

The feeling of worthiness that comes with the recognition of being a certified medical specialist, a professional attitude and a true understanding of patient needs enables the medical support professionals to achieve their goals. We applaud the people and organizations that support certification standards for healthcare professionals.

They are creating a better work environment, which leads to more professionals to fill the career market. And of course bring better care for the ones who need it most, the patients.

what's new?
New 2002 Phlebotomy Training Manual
East Orange, NJ has joined WB Saunders (a division of Harcourt Health Sciences) in contributing to a NEW Phlebotomy Training Manual that is due out in the beginning of 2002. NHA's role was to develop mock certification questions that individuals can use to study for the National Certification Exam and to develop competency skill standards. We are honored to work with such a progressive organization like WB Saunders, said Olga Suau-Quiles, RN, BSN., NHA Director. We also are in negotiations to assist in the development of EKG, Medical Assistant and Surgical Technician training manuals that are due out sometime in fall 2002.

News Release May 2001
NHA Joins Important Research

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) has joined forces with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Analytical Sciences Inc (ASI) in a research project on exposure to blood among non-hospital healthcare workers.

The research focuses mainly on phlebotomists working outside the hospital environment. Findings from this study will be used to develop
policies and safety measures designed to
protect phlebotomists from the serious risk of blood exposure and infection that includes HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

“We are very proud to be part of this study that we know will save thousands of lives” says Jon S. Brandt, Executive Administrator of the NHA.

“We look forward to the results and will assist in the process of alerting healthcare workers in following the policies and safety measures as soon as they are known,” Mr. Brandt added.

Health Care Workers Certification at Issue
The issue of uncertified or unlicensed Patient Care Associates (PCAs)--often another title for Phlebotomist--and Nurse Technicians (NTs) who work directly with hospital patients was the subject of a segment of ABC-TV's 20/20 over Thanksgiving Weekend. In the segment, news correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman relayed stories of unsupervised and poorly trained PCAs/NTs attending to patients.

Hoping to offer a solution to this national problem is the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), whose National Director, Olga Quiles, RN, BSN, called it a "serious matter." Established in 1989, the NHA is a certification agency that currently offers seven competency-based exams for healthcare professionals that have graduated from healthcare training organizations, schools, colleges and teaching hospitals who are seeking certification. Certifications are available for PCAs/NTs, Phlebotomists, EKG Technicians, Clinical medical Assistants, Medical Lab Assistants, and Billing and Coding Specialists. To qualify to take the NHA exam, participants must meet one of the following criteria:
You must have either a high school diploma or equivalency and you must have successfully completed an NHA approved training program in the field of study.

OR

You must have either a High School Diploma or equivalency and you must have worked in the field of certification for a minimum of 1 year (this must be accompanied by written proof of experience by director or employer).

In addition, the NHA provides required continuing education through home study tools.
Currently, Louisiana is the only state that requires healthcare workers to be certified to work in a hospital setting.

"It's really up to the individual hospitals to mandate certification," Quiles told Advance. "NHA certification is available so those who do choose to become certified can improve their chance of getting a job and/or an advancement. By being nationally certified, healthcare personnel show they are serious about their careers."
