Required

Requirements: [Statute 54.1-3321]

1. Applicant must submit an application to the pharmacy board.

2. Applicant must provide evidence of completion from a board- approved training program and a passing score on a board-approved exam or be certified by a board-approved program.

Renewal
Required

Applicant must submit a renewal application online ($25) to the pharmacy board annually. [18VAC110-20-105]

Training
Required

Technicians are required to participate in a board-approved training program unless they are certified by PTCB. [Statute 54.1-3321 B]

 The National Pharmacy Technician Training Program  has been approved by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.

Ratio
N/A

The technician-to-pharmacist ratio is 4:1. Of the four technicians, only two may be technicians-in-training. [18VAC110-20-270]

Continuing Education
Not Required

“A pharmacy technician shall be required to have completed a minimum of 0.5 CEUs or five contact hours of approved continuing education for each annual renewal of registration. Hours in excess of the number required for renewal may not be transferred or credited to another year.” [18VAC110-20-106]

Exam Requirements

Pharmacy technicians may practice if they pass a board approved exam (the ExCPT  or the Virginia Pharmacy Technician Exam) and complete a board-approved training program. (The National Pharmacy Technician Training Program, offered by ICPT, is approved.) Alternatively, technicians may pass the PTCE($129). The ExCPT has been approved as a board-approved exam.
